Various Purposes Of Silicon In Science

By Lisa McDycess

Whenever anyone says the word silicone, breast implants come to mind. If that was not true for you, then you must be thinking of it by now. However, there are other important uses of silicone than breast implants. These other uses are obviously more beneficial to the society on the whole.

Silicone has become multipurpose all thanks to the creation of molding and bonding processes. It is employed for the most basic purposes in hospitals and in advanced medical practices.

Silicone bonding as made many medical practices possible today. The material is non reactive. Therefore, it is being use for inner body procedures during operations and other processes. In some cases, it is even left inside the body, where it functions as an implant. It is also used as joint replacement.

Silicone is being employed in intensive medical procedures such as neuromodulation, which has to do with brain reactions. Such silicone materials are created in germ-free environments to ensure safety.

Silicone materials created in clean environments are sometimes not fit to be used again. One example is catheters. To solve this problem, these materials can be disposed after some time. This helps maintain the integrity of the medical procedures. This feature of disposability helps in the better and easier handling of these materials.

Age is not a limiting factor, when we talk about silicone. It has bought some good to people of every age. If you are young for knee replacements, then you must have used bandages, which are again made of silicone. Computers and microchips also make use of silicones.

Advent of silicone bonding and silicon molding technology has led to such extensive use of silicone.

As mentioned before, you must think that silicone use is limited to enhancing beauty. Well, this is not the case as you must have seen. It can be used to change lives for good.
